It was the first time she spoke publicly about her husband's death, and stressed the importance of resilience. The book concerns business leadership and development, issues with the lack of women in government and business leadership positions, and feminism. The book argues that barriers are still preventing women from taking leadership roles in the workplace, barriers such as discrimination, blatant and subtle sexism, and sexual harassment. Sandberg argues that in order for change to happen women need to break down these societal and personal barriers by striving for and achieving leadership roles. The ultimate goal is to encourage women to lean in to positions of leadership because she believes that by having more female voices in positions of power there will be more equitable opportunities created for everyone. A truly equal world would be one where women ran half our countries and companies and men ran half our homes. It is time to cheer on girls and women who want to sit at the table, seek challenges, and lean in to their careers. It is the most difficult work in the world. The book puts emphasis on grief and resilience in challenges within life. This new foundation will serve as an umbrella for LeanIn.

I enjoyed reading it and I came away from it feeling as if my grey matter had been deeply stimulated because it got me thinking about all kinds of things, specifically how humans use art, literature, music, drugs and travel to escape themselves, to gain new experiences and to make sense of the world around them.

An ageing narrator The book is narrated by someone called Rob, who may or may not be the Sheila McNamee Essays author. Sandwiched between each chapter is a one-page letter or email in which Rob writes to an unnamed friend, sharing an McNamee usually about the writing process or aphorism. For as long as you are working, you have a why: when you reach the end of a project, the why dissolves. You are left alone with yourself, in all the pain from which the work had offered relief.
